Reflection Essay

I posted my scarlet letter essay, the crucible essay, and my memoir because I really learned a lot throughout all of my essays. In English 3 honors, I have learned more proper writing techniques than any other english class that I have taken. One of the main things that I have learned is to transition my sentences better. In my scarlet letter essay, I didn't transition my sentences at all, and after being corrected I learned that there had to be something connecting the paragraphs. I also learned not to use so many being verbs. This threw off my paper, and I had to go back and correct them. Also in my memoir, I learned that I needed to work on my active voice, and not make my sentences so plain.
Part 2-I also learned a lot through reading other peoples essays. In Kacie Mccoy's essay " Gauntlet Departure" she really opened up her essay with great active voice. She also had a great attention getter.http://kacieleesblog.blogspot.com/
I also saw a great example of transition sentences in Ginny Cox's "The Crucible Essay." http://ginnyleighcox.blogspot.com/ I really enjoyed reading this essay because it was very organized and easy to understand.
In Elizabeth Baker's Nature Essay, she opened it up with a quote. I would have never thought about opening my paper with a quote, I just incorporated it into my paper. She made it work, and I thought it was very cool.http://ebthatsme.blogspot.com/

Scarlet Letter Essay

In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, an early Puritan colony uses a scaffold as a way to punish the convicted. A scaffold is a raised wooden platform with a crosspiece from which criminals are hanged. Though the scaffold has a very negative definition, it plays a very important role in this book. In The Scarlet Letter, the scaffold represents a place where people can find truth and reason. The use of the scaffold contributes to the theme of the novel is hypocricy in a society, and the scaffold was where people judged you.
Hester stood on the scaffold when she was convicted of committing adultery. Here, she was put to public misery. However, her partner of her iniquity did ot stand with her. The crowd demanded that she give them his name. " I will not speak! and my child must seek a heavenly Father; she shall never know an earthly one," Hester would tell them. Hester knew that Reverend Dimmesdale was her partner in crime, but she didn't want him to suffer along with her. Hester Prynne stood alone on the scaffold with her baby pressed against her chest. She faced the miserable truth that she would be shunned from society forever. Hawthorne is trying to show how judging people truly affects their lives.
Dimmesdale also found truth at the scaffold when he lost control in the middle of the night. 'He had been driven hither by the impulse of that Remorse which dogged him everywhere." His conscience was building up on him and re ran to the scaffold seven yuears after Hester stood there alone. When he saw Hester and Pearl, he asked them to stand with him. The three stood together forming an "electric chain." Dimmesdale wanted to admit his sin to the public, but the fact that he was a minister put pressure on him. He wanted to admit the truth, but Hester wouldn't let him. When he stand upon the scaffold, he knows the truth, yet he lacks the courage to take a public stand. Dimmesdale found the conclusion to his secret and life while standing on the scaffold. After preaching at the Election Day sermon, "He turned towards the scaffold, and stretched forth his arms." This is where he admitted to commiting adultery with Hester. He reunited with his formal self and truth when he confessed. He could now call Hester and Pearl his own. He said, " there was no place so secret,- no high place nor lowly place, where thou couldst have escaped me-saved on this very scaffold." Standing on the scaffold the truth came out and he felt a resolution to the problem which was hung over his head for so many years.
The scaffold in The Scarlet Letter represents a place where people find truth and reason. It is where Dimmesdale and Hester reunited. It is also where Dimmesdale took his final breath. The scaffold is where people found truth that was so often denied.

THE CRUCIBLE ESSAY

In the play, The Crucible Abigail Williams manipulates the town of Salem, Massachusetts and sends nineteen innocent people to their deaths. Abigail was an orphan girl whose parents were killed by Indians. Being an orphan, she was among the girls at the bottom of the Puritan Salem social ladder. Ministers and men were considered their authority. The chaos of the Salem Witch Trials gave her power. Abigail was a smart, sly, deceitful, and manipulating character. She was clearly the villain of the play. She has many qualities that can be compared to objects such as hot air balloons.
Abigail can be compared to a hot air balloon in several different ways. For instance, Abigail was a round character, and a hot air balloon is round.
Along with being round, the two can also be compared because they both thrive on fire. A hot air balloon cannot rise alone; therefore it needs hot air to rise. The fire gives off the hot air allowing the balloon to soar hundreds of feet into the sky. Abigail also thrived on fire, which was her jealousy and anger. Abigail was jealous of Elizabeth Proctor because Elizabeth was married to John Proctor. The previous year, Abigail and John had an affair, and Abigail could not seem to let him out of her mind. Abigail even accused Elizabeth of practicing witchcraft which sent her to jail, and eventually John to his death.
Abigail and hot air balloons can also compare because they both have “hanging baskets.” A hot air balloon has a basket hung below it, where passengers take a ride. When soaring in mid air, the balloon has control over the passengers inside of it. Unless the passengers want to fall to their death, they cannot jump out of the hot air balloon. The hanging basket can represent the town of Salem Massachusetts in the play The Crucible. Abigail slowly gained control over the town whenever people were accused. They all wanted to believe her and the other girls because they saw them as innocent children who wouldn’t lie. Whenever Abigail accused somebody of practicing witchcraft, they were automatically condemned. This is shown when Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor of having poppets.
Abigail and hot air balloons are two completely different objects, but as we have established, their qualities can be compared in many different ways. It is said that Abigail moved to Boston and became a prostitute. Nobody knows exactly what happened to her. However, we can rest on the fact that her manipulation and lies sent nineteen innocent people to their deaths. The Salem Witch trials will haunt the town of Salem, Massachusetts forever.

My Memoir

A couple of years ago, my youth group took a trip to the snow covered hilltops of Winterplace in West Virginia. There were four of us middle school girls: me, Haley, Christian, and Brady. We were all very eager and excited. Christian and I had skied together before, but Brady and Haley were on their way to their first ski trip. Eager and excited I could hardly wait to go down more difficult slopes with Christian. I knew I had a partner to go down the black diamonds with me. Black diamonds are usually the steepest slopes.
That night when we arrived at the warm and cozy lodge, we ordered pizza and hung out until about midnight. We knew that skiing sucked the energy out of you, so we wanted to be well-rested for the next day. The following morning, Brady and Haley straightened their hair, and put on makeup. Christian and I just rolled out of bed and threw up our hair. Skiing is not the most flattering sport in the world. We dressed in our bibs, jackets, scarves, and hats and headed for our thrilling day in the snow.
The cold wet snow, falling like rain, dropped on us as we walked up the stairs to the rental shack. Because they had never skied before, it was really funny to watch Haley and Brady stumble through the cold wet snow in the narrow ski shoes. Christian and I headed for the slopes, while Brady and Haley practiced on the simple beginner slope.
Christian and I had a great time together. I took on the difficult challenge of snowboarding. It was a lot of fun. We spent the first two hours speeding down slopes, goofing off, and making friends. We decided to go to the cabin and get some water. It's funny how you get so hot skiing when your out in the snow.
When Brady and Haley saw us, they were apparently surprised at how much fun we'd had. Brady wanted to go on the slower slopes only, and Haley had more confidence and wanted a challenge. She asked us what slopes we had been on and was shocked when we told her that we'd been on all of them.
Haley begged me to go on a black diamond with her. I explained to her that the dreaded sloping hills of the black diamonds were a lot more challenging than the green circles that she'd previously been down. Despite my warning, she wanted to try it anyways, so I agreed. Brady didn't feel sure enough, so Christian stayed behind with her.
On the ski lift, I explained to Haley that as soon as we arrived at the top of the mountain, we would be going almost straight down. I told her to keep her poles in her right hand and ski to the right. I would do the opposite with my left hand. I said this, so we would go in opposite directions and not ski side by side.
We arrived at the top of the monstrous and intimidating mountain and Haley bluntly ignored me. I figured that she was scared and felt she needed two poles for support. Haley's skiis crossed mine. Arms swinging, she abruptly fell. Quickly moving, I unhooked my skiis and ran over to her. She wasn't crying, but you could tell she was in pain. I asked her if she could get up, and when she said no, I ran up the slope to the guy at the lift. Within a few minutes, a snowmobile arrived and helped Haley onto the back. I followed them down the mountain to the emergency cabin.
Haley had broken her leg and had to ride home with her leg duct taped to a cardboard box. My two youth leaders had to carry her around the rest of the trip. Haley is a very accident prone person, so we thought it was funny that she had gotten hurt of all people. To this day, she tells people that I never told her to go to the right, but she and I both know that I did. Even though Haley broke her leg, it was one of my best ski trips ever.
